Riding our Pow surfers has really sparked a whole new love for the backcountry. Pow surfing, gave us back that feeling we all had when we first started skateboarding or snowboarding. Your imagination runs wild of all the possibilities and the potential for new spots.

POW SURF SET UP

We've been testing out different styles and approaches to get to our new zones and on this particular day here is a break down of our gear.

Verts

  • (proper backcountry snowshoes) are lightweight and easy to use for everyone. They make the climb through deep snow and variable conditions easy. Verts are one size fits all and are the ultimate snow climbing tool. Easy transition from riding to climbing with no extra weight to hold you back when riding (use poles when hiking up)

Vans Wolle Nyvelt Standard XF Pow surf boots

  • We've tested out riding with snowboard boots and the regular Vans Snow boots only to find leg cramps and heel blisters while hiking. These Wolle Nyvelt vans boots are one of the most comfortable winter boots we've worn & are great for all winter activities. Super comfy while hiking up with proper ankle and heel lock support without the stiffness. There is a little tab on the back heel that help keep your Verts from slipping off while hiking up. While riding they have the grip and flexibility for all situations - We highly recommend them.

686 Paclite Jacket

  • This shell jacket has full Gore-tex to protect you from the wind and rain. Go one size larger to make sure you have enough room for a puffy packable jacket on the cold days. Large side zip pockets for extra gloves, snacks and stash my Hero 8 Go Pro. Wool details around the top of the zipper help keep the warmth locked in while offering comfort on the walk up in colder conditions. Layering is key and this is the jacket for all occasions.

Bull Mountain Pow Thrashers

  • All 3 of us were riding Bull mountain Pow surfers. Handmade in Kelowna, BC with bases done by Wired in Squamish. Here are the boards we were riding with the description from the Bull Mountain guys. The 140 range works best for our variable conditions section of the Southwest Rockies.

  • 138 & 141 Hellhound - This board was shaped for one reason only...All Mountain THRASHING!!! Its wider spoon nose shape keeps you floating through the deep stuff (mellow or steep) while its swallowtail shape allows for quick turns and slashes with lots of bite. A perfect learn to pow surf shape.

  • 143 El Matador - Spanish for The Matador; this classic fish shape is perfect for those who enjoy charging the bigger steeper lines. A very playful all mountain board that means business when holding an edge on the steep and deep. When this gun fires, the charge is on!

There are tons of shapes and styles out there and we're are always here for recommendations. All that matters is that you pick one up today and start finding out what works for you. Just remember it's a humbling experience and you gotta put in the time. Have fun and laugh off the bails.
